My Top 10 Rom-Coms

Hi everyone, you know how I like to vary up the different posts, and I thought this one would be a fun post for all of you ‘chick-flick’ lovers.

I was thinking about how much I love romantic comedies, and I was completely inspired by the novel Love Like The Movies by Victoria Van Tiem. I would very highly recommend this book, especially if you’re a big rom-com lover, and chick-lit lover. You can read my review for the book – here.

When I’m feeling down, or just want to relax. I’ll pull on my onesie, grab a nice big cup of hot chocolate, and curl up on the couch, and stick on one of my favourite chick – flicks. I love the escapism, and the happy endings. I love all the fuzzy, fluffy meet cutes and the heart-warming big romantic gestures. I wanted to share my favourite ones with you all, and hopefully turn you on to one you might not have seen.

In no particular order, here are my Top 10 Rom-Coms!

Legally Blonde

I love watching Elle’s journey from a stereotyped blonde ‘bimbo’ to a mature, independent woman. This is the film I used to stick on when I needed inspiring to get some Uni work done, because I loved the scenes where she’s motivated to show everyone what she’s worth. I also love that this film is empowering, in a way, because Elle realises she doesn’t need a man or anyone to achieve her goals. I’ve also read the novel from which this book is adapted, and I’m thinking of putting up a review for it, what do you think?

Friends With Benefits

This film is fantastic, for many reasons. One being the actors, Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, who are incredible together. I love their banter, and how they tell it like it is. I also love that the film laughs at a (fictional) rom-com, and yet it still manages to follow the same plot structure. This film is set in New York, and it really makes me want to go back to visit everytime I watch it.

Bridget Jones’ Diary

This is another film that has been adapted from a novel, and also a column. I had read the novel after I’d seen the film, which I love. I think Renee Zellwegger is hilarious alongside Hugh Grant, and Colin Firth. Bridget is a 30-something, woman looking for love, on the way she experiences some hilarious situations, including big knickers, firefighter’s poles, and blue soup.

Mean Girls

I think this is one of the most quotable films I’ve ever seen, and is still quoted on a daily basis. Recently it was the 10 year anniversary of the films release, and I loved seeing all the fans quoting it on twitter. This film is hilarious, focusing on girls in a high school clique terrorising each other. You can’t sit with us!

10 Things I Hate About You

This is my favourite Heath Ledger film, who could forget his infamous song on the school bleachers? Granted, he was paid to win a girls affections so that someone else could date her sister. I love Julia Stiles in this, her character is fantastic and speaks her mind. I love the all of the music used in the film, and the hilarious, well-written dialogue.

Sex And The City

I love the TV series of Sex And The City, and was really excited to see the characters several years later in the film version. It was fantastic to see where the characters ended up, and to watch their lives unfold over a longer period of time. I loved seeing the different holidays, such as Halloween and New Year’s Eve, and I loved seeing the friendship on the big screen.

He’s Just Not That In To You

This film made the list because I adored the multiple narrative streams. It fascinated me how all the characters were connected, either through friends, or colleagues. I loved watching how each relationship evolved and how the characters interact with each other. My favourite relationship is Gigi and Alex, I can relate to Gigi’s hopefullness the most.

The Devil Wears Prada

This film is perfect for those girls that are into fashion. I can’t say I’m overly fussed, I’m attracted to Anne Hathaway’s character, and her ambitions. She’s striving to be a writer and doesn’t give up when she’s got her mind set on something. Also, Meryl Streep as ‘The Devil’, Miranda Priestly, is so fantastic she gives me the chills.

You’ve Got Mail

If I’m having one of those days were I want to feel all of the warm and fuzzies, then this is the film I’d turn to. The protagonist owns the cutest book shop, one that I could only dream of owning myself. I love everything about this film, and the nostalgia of hearing the dial up tone of the internet, and it makes me look forward to Autumn or Winter.

Something Borrowed

Another fantastic Gennifer Goodwin film, and again, she plays a character that is vulnerable and quirky. She’s torn between the love of her best friend, Darcy, who is over bearing and overly confident, and her best friend from College, Dex. He just also happens to be Darcy’s fianceé. Not only is this film dramatic, and heart-stopping, but it is hilarious.
